Lobby or airport. Proceed to Bago, 80km north east of Yangon, the ancient capital
of the glorious Mon dynasty. On the way visit Allied War Memorial
Cemetery located at Htauk Kyant, about 32km from Yangon. In Bago,
visit 2000 year old Shwe Mawdaw Pagoda, Shwe Thalyaung reclining Buddha
image. Lunch at a traditional Restaurant. After Lunch, proceed
to Maha Zedi built in mid 16th Century. Kyaik-Pun Pagoda, Kalyani Sima
(Ordination Hall) excavation site of the ancient capital Hansavaddy and

Day 1:
Yangon -
Bago -
Kyaik-Tiyo (L,D):
Pick-up at your hotel for the drive to
Bago (84km - 1½ hours). Sightseeing
starts with the charming and characteristic Monastery of Kya Khet Waii, an
eminent teaching center for hundreds of monks from neighboring regions to study
Buddhism. You will have ample time to observe when the monks walk mindfully in
procession for their last meal of the day. After seeing over a thousand years
old Shwesandaw Pagoda with its spire taller than the Shwedagon Pagoda, you will
proceed to the Kin Pun 'base camp' (110km - 3 1/2 hours). Lunch at local
restaurant en route. The tour will continue to one of Myanmar's landmarks, which
is famous for its precarious position and religious importance: Kyaik-Tiyo the
'Golden Rock', a huge boulder completely covered by gold leaf and delicately
balanced on the edge of a cliff. To reach the Pagoda from Kin Pun a steep 11km
road leads to the upper staging point. The journey is made in open trucks, which
are very crowded. The 'upper area' must be traveled by foot, at present, and the
walk is approximately 4km (1 hour) up a steep path which ascends some 500 m to
the Golden Rock. If you wish to take a more comfortable approach, you can sit
back and be carried in sedan chairs by four porters. This will incur an extra
cost of approx. US$8. On arrival you can enjoy the beautiful
sunset. Dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast you will return to
Yangon (194km - 5 hours). After lunch at a local restaurant in Bago,
continue sightseeing with the 55-meter long reclining Shwe Tha Lyaung Buddha, which is among one of the country's most impressive
image and the four giant Buddha images at Kyaik Pun Pagoda. After visiting a
'Mon' weaving and handicraft village producing woven bamboo wares return to
Yangon with visits to an Allied War Graves cemetery near Htauk Kyan and a "Nat"
tree shrine on the way back. |

Bago -

Pick-up at your hotel for the drive to Thanatpin (99km – 2 hour). You stop at a
tree shrine dedicated to a legendary "Nat", as well as the four giant Buddha
images at Kyaik Pun Pagoda on the way. After a stroll through the colorful
local Market you board a small long-tail boat. Enjoy your cruise through rice fields with duck farms and small Mon villages are scattered along the
waterway. After lunch at a local restaurant in Bago you will proceed to the
Kin Pun ‘base camp’ (110km - 3 1/2 hours). The tour will continue to one of

After breakfast, depart
Kyaik-Tiyo (120km – 3 1/2 hours) for Hpa-An the capital
of the Kayin State. En route stop in Thaton, the former capital of the Mon
Kingdom. Lunch at simple restaurant en route. Upon arrival explore some of the
Caves which are set deep into the sides of the limestone cliffs which dominate
the scenery of water bodies and green islands. Visit the National Museum of
Kayin, Lake Kantharyar for photo stop and the local Market. Proceed to Shweyinhmyaw
Pagoda located at the banks of Thanlwin River.
Dinner at local restaurant and overnight (very simple and
basic) in Hpa-An.

Day 3: Hpa-An -
Mawlamyine (B,L,D):
Start your day with a Myanmar style breakfast in one of the local teashops. A
short walk will take you to the pier for your journey on the double-decker River
ferry to Mawlamyine. Sit back in your sling-chair on the upper deck and enjoy a
truly mystical scenery of green peaks soaring into the sky pass-by. Observe the
interesting life on board; sellers, monks, families and officials on their way
to small villages or the port town of Mawlamyine. Once you see monasteries doted
on a mountain range you know that your destination is soon to be reached. After
arrival a cyclo takes you along the Strand Road, past colonial buildings to
Ngwee Moe Hotel.
After lunch drive past rubber plantation to Thanbyuzayat. 70km (2 hours) south
of Mawlamyine was the western terminal of the infamous Burma-Siam ‘Death
Railway’. Visit a locomotive dating from World War II, a small museum and an
Allied War Cemetery, resting-place for over 3,500 Allied POWs. Return to Mawlamyine late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in
Mawlamyine.

Day 4:
Mawlamyine –
Bilu Island (B,L,D):
After breakfast
cyclo-tour through the post colonial city. The sightseeing
includes
Maha Muni Pagoda, a major Temple site in Myanmar;
Seindon Mibaya Kyung,
where King Mindon’s queen sought refuge, the first Baptist church and the Zyegyi
Market.
Before lunch board the bustling ferry, full of villagers loaded with goods from
the Market. After a 1 hour ride you reach Bilu Island, where a true Myanmar
experience far away from modern civilization awaits you. By open pick up truck
you will discover the serene scenery of paddy fields and quaint villages. Picnic
or boxed lunch en route. Visit small wood workshops, typical for Myanmar where
walking sticks and pens are produced. Return to Mawlamyine late afternoon to
enjoy the sunset from Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, known as the Kipling Pagoda.
Dinner and overnight in Mawlamyine.

Mawlamyine –
Yangon (B):
After early breakfast, return to
Yangon (364km – 8 hours). Stop by Kaytin, a
small Buddhist community at the significant Mount Zwekabin and take a stroll
through the village. Lunch at local restaurant near Kyaik-Tiyo.
Upon arrival in Yangon, transfer to your hotel. |

Day 1:
Yangon (no meals):
Upon arrival at Yangon Airport you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Your journey begins with an afternoon tour
through Yangon’s colonial-style city center. Visit Sule Pagoda, dating
back over 2,000 years ago; the magnificent reclining Buddha at Chauk Hauk
Htat Gyi and after a
photo stop at the Karaweik Hall, a 'hamsa-bird-shaped' floating barge on
Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake; stroll through the Bogyoke (Scotts) Market with
hundreds of food, clothes, handicrafts and gems stores. Complete your
first day with an extended visit to one of the world’s most
spectacular monuments, the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Day 2:
Yangon –
Mandalay
(B,L,D):
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for domestic flight to
Mandalay. Upon arrival at Mandalay airport, transfer to your hotel. Experience
the sights and sounds of Mandalay including one of the most revered religious
monuments in Myanmar, the
Maha Muni Pagoda; the Shwe Ibin
Monastery, the Golden Palace Monastery - a superb example of a traditional
wooden building and Kuthodaw Pagoda - the world’s largest book, made of marble. Visit a traditional hand-woven
silk workshop as well as a Kalaga tapestries craftsmen’s shop before proceeding
to Mandalay Hill for sunset.

Day 3: Amarapura - Ava – Sagaing (B,L,D):
After breakfast, excursion to Amarapura, 15km from Mandalay. Visit
Mahagandayon,
a famous Buddhist Monastery, where more than a thousand monks live and study;
continue to 200-year-old U Bein teak bridge, built in 1782 at the time when
Amarapura was the Royal capital. Visit Bagaya Monastery, with a superb collection of
Buddha statues. After lunch at local restaurant, excursion to the former Royal
Capital of Inwa (Ava), reached by a short boat trip. Visits by horse-drawn
carriage to Nanmyint Watch Tower, the remains of the palace building nicknamed
"the leaning tower of Ava"; Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery, built of brick and
stucco; Bargayar Monastery, famous for its impressive ornate woodcarvings and
teak posts. Continue to Sagaing Hills, a retreat for Buddhist devotees
for sunset.

Day 4:
Mandalay -
Monywa (B,L,D):
After breakfast, proceed to Monywa (150km - 4 hours). Visit en route the
Thanbodday Pagoda; 845 small Stupas are rising up to the richly decorated
central Stupa, which is reminding a bit of Borobudur in Java. Take a walk
through the nearby banyan tree grove Boddhi-Tataung with the thousand Buddha
images sitting at the foot of each tree and enjoy the panoramic view from
Aung Setkaya Pagoda, standing 130 m high on the Po Khaung Hills. After lunch at
simple local restaurant, cross the Chindwin River by ferry boat and proceed by
pick-up or jeep (40km - 1 hour) to Hpo Win Daung, a system of impressive
sandstone caves containing Buddha statues, wood carvings and fine mural
paintings mainly in Inwa style, some dating back to 15th century. Dozens of
large and small caves with about 450,000 images are hidden in the area of the Hpo Win
Hills.
Dinner and overnight stay in simple hotel with basic facilities in Monywa.

Day 5: Monywa –
Pakokku -
Bagan (B,L,D):
After breakfast, drive to Pakkoku (110km – 4 hours), a port city set south of
the Chindwin confluence. On the way you will stop in Pakhangyi to visit
one of the oldest ornate teak monasteries of the country.
After lunch at simple local restaurant in Pakkoku you will visit the typical
local Market by traditional trishaws (if available) and possibility to see the
weaving of the characteristic Myanmar cotton blankets. Proceed by boat on the
Ayeywaddy River to Bagan where you will arrive in time for sunset. This downriver trip takes about 2 hours (depending on River conditions it might take
longer). Upon arrival, transfer to hotel.

Day 6:
Bagan (B,L,D):
After breakfast, stroll through the colorful local
Market and continue the day
with visits to the most significant Pagodas and Temples of Bagan including
Shwezigon Pagoda, built by King
Anawratha in the early 11th century as
a religious shrine; Ku Byanuk Gyi, a Temple with superb murals of Jataka scenes;
Khay Min Ga Temple, noted for its panoramic view of the area’s numerous
monuments and Ananda Temple, with four standing Buddha images. After lunch at
local restaurant, visit one of Myanmar’s most treasured handicrafts, a lacquerware craftsmen’s workshop in nearby
Myinkabar village. You will continue
to Manuha Temple, built in the Mon style in 1059 and follow on to Nanbaya Temple, a unique sandstone monument said to have been the palace of King
Manuha. Proceed to Bupaya Pagoda or Mingala Zedi Stupa to watch the sunset over the
famous Ayeywaddy River. Dinner at a Riverside restaurant

Day 7:
Bagan (B,L,D):
After breakfast, visit the site of Tayokepyay
Temple in Min Nan Thu Village; Phaya Thone Zu and Nandamanya Temples noted for exquisite murals of 13th century
and Kyat Kan Cave Monastery, a famous meditation retreat in Bagan. After lunch
at local restaurant, explore the Myinkabar Gu Byaukgyi Temple,
noteworthy for its mural paintings under the protection of UNESCO and visit the
Archaeological Museum to view the beautiful Buddha images of bronze, stone
and lacquer. Dinner at a Riverside restaurant.

Bagan – Mount Popa -
Kalaw (B,L,D):
After early breakfast, a 300km drive (8 hours) to
Kalaw. En route
visit Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with spectacular views. Its shrine
is dedicated to animist spirits known as "Nats" and you will have time to climb
the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the peak. After lunch at simple local
restaurant en route, continue on a narrow, winding and bumpy road
through the Shan Hills. In the late afternoon reach Kalaw, a fresh and
delightful Hill station, on the rim of the Shan Plateau, which is a Market
center for ethnic minorities from surrounding regions. Dinner at
hotel.

Day 9:
Kalaw –
Nyaung Shwe -
Inle Lake
(B,L,D):
After breakfast, set out for an excursion on foot (about 4 hours walk) to the
Tar Yaw village of the Palaung tribe. The animist Palaungs were amongst the
earliest inhabitants in Myanmar and have kept to their traditions living with
several families in ‘long-houses’, cultivating crops and tanapet for
Burmese cheroots. Take a walk to their plantations and visit the village
before returning to Kalaw.
After lunch, transfer to Nyaung Shwe (66km – 1 ½ hours) and proceed by boat to
your hotel.
Dinner at hotel and overnight stay.

Inle Lake (B,L,D):
After breakfast, full day excursion by boat on
Inle Lake to see the famous leg
rowers, typical floating gardens, local methods of fishing, village life and
magnificent scenery. Visit the Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda, one of the main
principle shrines in Myanmar and dating back to the 18th century; the Nga Phe
Kyaung Monastery, famous for its jumping cats trained by monks; the weaving
village of Inpawkhon and to one of the local Markets in the Inle Lake region (on
Market days only). Dinner at hotel and overnight stay.

Inle Lake – Heho –

After breakfast, you will be transferred by boat to
Nyaung Shwe and proceed to Heho Airport (25km – 1 hour) for domestic flight to
Yangon. Upon arrival at Yangon airport, transfer to your hotel. Complete your
Yangon impressions with a
visit to the Kaba Aye (World Peace) Pagoda and the Mahapasana Cave, where the
sixth Buddhist synod took place. Proceed to Yangon’s oldest Chinese Temple and
at the Riverside located Botataung Pagoda. Last but not least, see the 8m
high Golden Lion Throne as well as the Mandalay Royal Regalia at the National

After breakfast, start your drive to Bago (84km - 1½ hours). Sightseeing starts
with the charming and characteristic Monastery of Kya Khet Waii, an eminent
teaching center for hundreds of monks from neighboring regions to study
Buddhism. You will have ample time to observe when the monks walk mindfully in
procession for their last meal of the day. The tour continues to the over a
thousand years old Shwesandaw Pagoda with its spire taller than the Shwedagon
Pagoda. Proceed to the Kin Pun 'base camp' (110km - 3 1/2 hours), lunch at
local restaurant en route. The tour will continue to one of Myanmar's landmarks,
which is famous for its precarious position and religious importance: Kyaik-Tiyo
the 'Golden Rock', a huge boulder completely covered by gold leaf and delicately
balanced on the edge of a cliff. To reach the Pagoda from Kin Pun a steep 11km
road leads to the upper staging point. The journey is made in open trucks, which
are very crowded. The 'upper area' must be traveled by foot, at present, and the
walk is approximately 4km up a steep path which ascends some 500 m to the Golden
Rock. If you wish to take a more comfortable approach, you can sit back
and be carried in sedan chairs by four porters. This will incur an extra cost of

After early breakfast, transfer to the jetty and board the Chinese-built ferry
for your journey on the AYEYARWADY River to Bagan. The trip takes approx. 8
hours downriver, depending on River conditions and water level. Boxed lunch will
be provided. Upon arrival in Bagan, transfer to your hotel and time
permitting start with sightseeing. Dinner and overnight stay in Bagan.

After breakfast, stroll through the colorful local
Market and continue the day
with visits to the most significant Pagodas and Temples of Bagan including
Shwezigon Pagoda, built by King
Anawratha in the early 11th century as
a religious shrine; Ku Byanuk Gyi, a Temple with superb murals of Jataka scenes;
Khay Min Ga Temple, noted for its panoramic view of the area’s numerous
monuments and Ananda Temple, with four standing Buddha images. After lunch at
local restaurant, visit one of Myanmar’s most treasured handicrafts, a lacquerware craftsmen’s workshop in nearby
Myinkabar village. You will continue
to Manuha Temple, built in the Mon style in 1059 and follow on to Nanbaya Temple, a unique sandstone monument said to have been the palace of King
Manuha. Proceed to Bupaya Pagoda or Mingala Zedi Stupa to watch the sunset over the
famous Ayeywaddy River.

Temple in Min Nan Thu Village; Phaya Thone Zu and Nandamanya Temples noted for exquisite murals of 13th

villages around Bagan will give you insight into the lives of the local people. After lunch at local restaurant in
Bagan, a colorfully decorated ox-cart (if

traditional way of transportation used by people in Myanmar's countryside. Close

Bagan – Mount Popa -
Kalaw (B,L,D):
After early breakfast, a 300km drive (8 hours) will take you to
Kalaw. En route
you will visit Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with spectacular views. Its shrine
is dedicated to animist spirits known as "nats" and you will have time to climb
the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the peak. After lunch at simple local
restaurant en route, the journey continues on a narrow, winding and bumpy road
through the Shan Hills. In the late afternoon you will reach Kalaw, a fresh and
delightful Hill station, on the rim of the Shan Plateau, which is a Market
center for ethnic minorities from surrounding regions. Dinner and
overnight stay in Kalaw.

Pindaya - Nyaung Shwe (B,L,D):
After breakfast, proceed by road to Pindaya (52km – 1 ½ hour) and visit
Pindaya Caves, a unique site housing thousands of Buddha images placed there by pilgrims
over the centuries.
After lunch in Pindaya, continue to Nyaung Shwe (95km – 2 ½ hours) and check-in
at your hotel.

Inle Lake (B,L,D):
After breakfast, a full day excursion by boat on
Inle Lake will include sights
of the famous leg rowers, typical floating gardens, local methods of fishing,
village life and magnificent scenery. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant
on the lake itself. Visits are made to Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda; the weaving village
of Inpawkhon and to one of the local Markets in the Inle Lake region (on Market
days only). In the afternoon, depending on the water level, board a boat to the
Western Shore of Inle Lake, where you will find the beginning of a stair path
leading to the hidden and unknown Inn Thein Pagoda complex. Dinner and
overnight stay in Nyaung Shwe.

After breakfast, you will be transferred by boat to Nyaung Shwe and proceed to Heho Airport (25km – 1 hour) for domestic flight to

leisure with time for own explorations, shopping or relaxing by the pool.

through Yangon’s colonial-style city center. Visit Sule Pagoda, dating back over
2,000 years ago; the magnificent reclining Buddha at Chauk Htat Gyi and after a
photo stop at the Karaweik Hall, a 'hamsa-bird-shaped' floating barge on
Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake; stroll through the Bogyoke (Scotts) Market with
hundreds of food, clothes, handicrafts and gems stores. Complete your
first day in Myanmar with an extended visit to one of the world’s most
spectacular monuments, the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Yangon
– Pyay (Prome) (B,L,D):
After early breakfast, drive (280km – 6 hours) to
Pyay (Prome), situated near the ancient capital of Sri Ksetra (Thayekhittaya), which flourished between 5th
and 9th century and where extensive archaeological excavations have taken place. After lunch at local restaurant, start a boat trip through the walls of the
limestone Riverbanks, along the ancient Pagodas to Akaut Taung, a former customs
gate for merchants sailing on the Ayeywaddy. En route, stop at Myoma Village,
which used to be a palace site during the 8th century. Continue to Htone Village
from where you will be transferred back to Pyay by road. Dinner at simple
local restaurant and overnight stay in Pyay.

After breakfast, admire the ancient Stupas of the
Be Be Gyi
Pagoda and visit the
Archaeological Museum at the Hmawzar Village, before you continue your 350km (9

Bagan - Sale -
Mount Popa (B,L,D):
After early breakfast, you will board a boat
downriver (approx. 3 hours) to
explore Sale, a town which developed during the late Bagan era. Worth a
visit is the Yoke Sone Monastery with its exceptional woodcarvings on the outside of the
building.
After lunch at local restaurant, continue to visit Mount Popa, an extinct
volcano with spectacular views. Its shrine is dedicated to animist spirits known
as "nats" and you will have time to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top
of the peak. Transfer to the Popa Mountain Resort and rest of the day at leisure
for relaxing by the pool or strolls through the surrounding forest.

Day 8: Amarapura -
Mandalay (B,L,D):
After breakfast, excursion to Amarapura, 15km from Mandalay. Visit
Mahagandayon,

wooden building and Kuthodaw Pagoda the world’s largest book,
made of marble. Visit a traditional hand-woven silk workshop as well as a Kalaga
tapestries craftsmen’s shop before proceeding to Mandalay Hill for sunset.

Mandalay -
Monywa (B,L,D):
After breakfast, proceed to Monywa (150km - 4 hours). Visit en route the
Thanbodday Pagoda; 845 small Stupas are rising up to the richly decorated
central Stupa, which is reminding a bit of Borobudur in Java. Take a walk
through the nearby banyan tree grove Boddhi-Tataung with the thousand Buddha
images sitting at the foot of each tree and enjoy the panoramic view from
Aung Setkaya Pagoda, standing 130 meter high on the
Po Khaung Hills. After lunch at simple local restaurant, cross the
Chindwin River by ferry boat and proceed by pick-up or jeep (40km - 1 hour) to
Hpo Win Daung, a system of impressive sandstone Caves containing Buddha statues, wood
carvings and fine mural paintings mainly in Inwa-style, some dating back to 15th
century. Dozens of large and small Caves with about 450,000 images are hidden in
the area of the Hpo Win Hills. Dinner and overnight stay in Monywa.
