Golden Rock Excursion - 2 Day/1 Night

Day 1: Yangon - Bago - Kyaik-Tiyo (L,D):  Pick-up at your hotel for the drive to Bago (84km - 1½ hours).  Sightseeing starts with the charming and characteristic Monastery of Kya Khet Waii, an eminent teaching center for hundreds of monks from neighboring regions to study Buddhism.  You will have ample time to observe when the monks walk mindfully in procession for their last meal of the day.  After seeing over a thousand years old Shwesandaw Pagoda with its spire taller than the Shwedagon Pagoda, you will proceed to the Kin Pun 'base camp' (110km - 3 1/2 hours).  Lunch at local restaurant en route.  The tour will continue to one of Myanmar's landmarks, which is famous for its precarious position and religious importance: Kyaik-Tiyo the 'Golden Rock', a huge boulder completely covered by gold leaf and delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff.  To reach the Pagoda from Kin Pun a steep 11km road leads to the upper staging point.  The journey is made in open trucks, which are very crowded.  The 'upper area' must be traveled by foot, at present, and the walk is approximately 4km (1 hour) up a steep path which ascends some 500 m to the Golden Rock.  If you wish to take a more comfortable approach, you can sit back and be carried in sedan chairs by four porters.  This will incur an extra cost of approx. US$8.  On arrival you can enjoy the beautiful  sunset.  Dinner and overnight stay. 

Day 2: Kyaik-Tiyo - Bago - Yangon (B,L):  After breakfast you will return to Yangon (194km - 5 hours).  After lunch at a local restaurant in Bago, continue sightseeing with the 55-meter long reclining Shwe Tha Lyaung Buddha, which is among one of the country's most impressive image and the four giant Buddha images at Kyaik Pun Pagoda.  After visiting a 'Mon' weaving and handicraft village producing woven bamboo wares return to Yangon with visits to an Allied War Graves cemetery near Htauk Kyan and a "Nat" tree shrine on the way back.

Rivers, Rocks & Caves of Southern Myanmar - 5 Day/4 Night

Day 2: Kyaik-Tiyo – Hpa-An (B,L,D):  After breakfast, depart Kyaik-Tiyo (120km – 3 1/2 hours) for Hpa-An the capital of the Kayin State.  En route stop in Thaton, the former capital of the Mon Kingdom.  Lunch at simple restaurant en route.  Upon arrival explore some of the Caves which are set deep into the sides of the limestone cliffs which dominate the scenery of water bodies and green islands.  Visit the National Museum of Kayin, Lake Kantharyar for photo stop and the local Market.  Proceed to Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda located at the banks of Thanlwin River.  Dinner at local restaurant and overnight (very simple and basic) in Hpa-An.

Day 3: Hpa-An - Mawlamyine (B,L,D):  Start your day with a Myanmar style breakfast in one of the local teashops.  A short walk will take you to the pier for your journey on the double-decker River ferry to Mawlamyine.  Sit back in your sling-chair on the upper deck and enjoy a truly mystical scenery of green peaks soaring into the sky pass-by.  Observe the interesting life on board; sellers, monks, families and officials on their way to small villages or the port town of Mawlamyine.  Once you see monasteries doted on a mountain range you know that your destination is soon to be reached.  After arrival a cyclo takes you along the Strand Road, past colonial buildings to Ngwee Moe Hotel.   After lunch drive past rubber plantation to Thanbyuzayat.  70km (2 hours) south of Mawlamyine was the western terminal of the infamous Burma-Siam ‘Death Railway’.  Visit a locomotive dating from World War II, a small museum and an Allied War Cemetery, resting-place for over 3,500 Allied POWs.  Return to Mawlamyine late afternoon.  Dinner and overnight in Mawlamyine. 

Day 4: Mawlamyine – Bilu Island (B,L,D):  After breakfast cyclo-tour through the post colonial city.  The sightseeing includes Maha Muni Pagoda, a major Temple site in Myanmar; Seindon Mibaya Kyung, where King Mindon’s queen sought refuge, the first Baptist church and the Zyegyi Market.  Before lunch board the bustling ferry, full of villagers loaded with goods from the Market.  After a 1 hour ride you reach Bilu Island, where a true Myanmar experience far away from modern civilization awaits you.  By open pick up truck you will discover the serene scenery of paddy fields and quaint villages.  Picnic or boxed lunch en route.  Visit small wood workshops, typical for Myanmar where walking sticks and pens are produced.  Return to Mawlamyine late afternoon to enjoy the sunset from Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, known as the Kipling Pagoda.  Dinner and overnight in Mawlamyine.

Day 5: Mawlamyine Yangon (B):  After early breakfast, return to Yangon (364km – 8 hours).  Stop by Kaytin, a small Buddhist community at the significant Mount Zwekabin and take a stroll through the village.  Lunch at local restaurant near Kyaik-Tiyo.  Upon arrival in Yangon, transfer to your hotel.

Trails of Myanmar - 12 Day/11 Night

Day 1: Yangon (no meals):  Upon arrival at Yangon Airport you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel.  Your journey begins with an afternoon tour through Yangon’s colonial-style city center.  Visit Sule Pagoda, dating back over 2,000 years ago; the magnificent reclining Buddha at Chauk Hauk Htat Gyi and after a photo stop at the Karaweik Hall, a 'hamsa-bird-shaped' floating barge on Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake; stroll through the Bogyoke (Scotts) Market with hundreds of food, clothes, handicrafts and gems stores.  Complete your first day with an extended visit to one of the world’s most spectacular monuments, the Shwedagon Pagoda. 

Day 2: Yangon Mandalay (B,L,D):  After breakfast, transfer to the airport for domestic flight to Mandalay.  Upon arrival at Mandalay airport, transfer to your hotel.  Experience the sights and sounds of Mandalay including one of the most revered religious monuments in Myanmar, the Maha Muni Pagoda; the Shwe Ibin Monastery, the Golden Palace Monastery - a superb example of a traditional wooden building and Kuthodaw Pagoda - the world’s largest book, made of marble.  Visit a traditional hand-woven silk workshop as well as a Kalaga tapestries craftsmen’s shop before proceeding to Mandalay Hill for sunset. 

Day 3: Amarapura - Ava – Sagaing (B,L,D):  After breakfast, excursion to Amarapura, 15km from Mandalay.  Visit Mahagandayon, a famous Buddhist Monastery, where more than a thousand monks live and study; continue to 200-year-old U Bein teak bridge, built in 1782 at the time when Amarapura was the Royal capital.  Visit Bagaya Monastery, with a superb collection of Buddha statues.  After lunch at local restaurant, excursion to the former Royal Capital of Inwa (Ava), reached by a short boat trip.  Visits by horse-drawn carriage to Nanmyint Watch Tower, the remains of the palace building nicknamed "the leaning tower of Ava"; Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery, built of brick and stucco; Bargayar Monastery, famous for its impressive ornate woodcarvings and teak posts.  Continue to Sagaing Hills, a retreat for Buddhist devotees for sunset. 

Day 4: Mandalay - Monywa (B,L,D):  After breakfast, proceed to Monywa (150km - 4 hours).  Visit en route the Thanbodday Pagoda; 845 small Stupas are rising up to the richly decorated central Stupa, which is reminding a bit of Borobudur in Java.  Take a walk through the nearby banyan tree grove Boddhi-Tataung with the thousand Buddha images sitting at the foot of each tree and enjoy the panoramic view from Aung Setkaya Pagoda, standing 130 m high on the Po Khaung Hills.  After lunch at simple local restaurant, cross the Chindwin River by ferry boat and proceed by pick-up or jeep (40km - 1 hour) to Hpo Win Daung, a system of impressive sandstone caves containing Buddha statues, wood carvings and fine mural paintings mainly in Inwa style, some dating back to 15th century.  Dozens of large and small caves with about 450,000 images are hidden in the area of the Hpo Win Hills.  Dinner and overnight stay in simple hotel with basic facilities in Monywa. 

Day 5: Monywa – Pakokku - Bagan (B,L,D):  After breakfast, drive to Pakkoku (110km – 4 hours), a port city set south of the Chindwin confluence.  On the way you will stop in Pakhangyi to visit one of the oldest ornate teak monasteries of the country.  After lunch at simple local restaurant in Pakkoku you will visit the typical local Market by traditional trishaws (if available) and possibility to see the weaving of the characteristic Myanmar cotton blankets.  Proceed by boat on the Ayeywaddy River to Bagan where you will arrive in time for sunset.  This downriver trip takes about 2 hours (depending on River conditions it might take longer).  Upon arrival, transfer to hotel. 

Day 6: Bagan (B,L,D):  After breakfast, stroll through the colorful local Market and continue the day with visits to the most significant Pagodas and Temples of Bagan including Shwezigon Pagoda, built by King Anawratha in the early 11th century as a religious shrine; Ku Byanuk Gyi, a Temple with superb murals of Jataka scenes; Khay Min Ga Temple, noted for its panoramic view of the area’s numerous monuments and Ananda Temple, with four standing Buddha images.  After lunch at local restaurant, visit one of Myanmar’s most treasured handicrafts, a lacquerware craftsmen’s workshop in nearby Myinkabar village.  You will continue to Manuha Temple, built in the Mon style in 1059 and follow on to Nanbaya Temple, a unique sandstone monument said to have been the palace of King Manuha.  Proceed to Bupaya Pagoda or Mingala Zedi Stupa to watch the sunset over the famous Ayeywaddy River.  Dinner at a Riverside restaurant

Day 7: Bagan (B,L,D):  After breakfast, visit the site of Tayokepyay Temple in Min Nan Thu Village; Phaya Thone Zu and Nandamanya Temples noted for exquisite murals of 13th century and Kyat Kan Cave Monastery, a famous meditation retreat in Bagan.  After lunch at local restaurant, explore the Myinkabar Gu Byaukgyi Temple, noteworthy for its mural paintings under the protection of UNESCO and visit the Archaeological Museum to view the beautiful Buddha images of bronze, stone and lacquer.  Dinner at a Riverside restaurant. 

Day 8: Bagan – Mount Popa - Kalaw (B,L,D):  After early breakfast, a 300km drive (8 hours) to Kalaw.  En route visit Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with spectacular views.  Its shrine is dedicated to animist spirits known as "Nats" and you will have time to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the peak.  After lunch at simple local restaurant en route, continue on a narrow, winding and bumpy road through the Shan Hills.  In the late afternoon reach Kalaw, a fresh and delightful Hill station, on the rim of the Shan Plateau, which is a Market center for ethnic minorities from surrounding regions.  Dinner at hotel.

Day 9: Kalaw – Nyaung Shwe - Inle Lake (B,L,D):  After breakfast, set out for an excursion on foot (about 4 hours walk) to the Tar Yaw village of the Palaung tribe.  The animist Palaungs were amongst the earliest inhabitants in Myanmar and have kept to their traditions living with several families in ‘long-houses’, cultivating crops and tanapet for Burmese cheroots. Take a walk to their plantations and visit the village before returning to Kalaw.  After lunch, transfer to Nyaung Shwe (66km – 1 ½ hours) and proceed by boat to your hotel.  Dinner at hotel and overnight stay.

Day 10: Inle Lake (B,L,D):  After breakfast, full day excursion by boat on Inle Lake to see the famous leg rowers, typical floating gardens, local methods of fishing, village life and magnificent scenery.  Visit the Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda, one of the main principle shrines in Myanmar and dating back to the 18th century; the Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery, famous for its jumping cats trained by monks; the weaving village of Inpawkhon and to one of the local Markets in the Inle Lake region (on Market days only).  Dinner at hotel and overnight stay.

Day 11: Inle Lake – Heho – Yangon (B):  :  After breakfast, you will be transferred by boat to Nyaung Shwe and proceed to Heho Airport (25km – 1 hour) for domestic flight to Yangon.  Upon arrival at Yangon airport, transfer to your hotel.  Complete your Yangon impressions with a visit to the Kaba Aye (World Peace) Pagoda and the Mahapasana Cave, where the sixth Buddhist synod took place.  Proceed to Yangon’s oldest Chinese Temple and at the Riverside located Botataung Pagoda.  Last but not least, see the 8m high Golden Lion Throne as well as the Mandalay Royal Regalia at the National Museum.  Lunch and dinner to your own account and overnight stay.

Day 4: Mount Popa – Mandalay (B,L,D):  After breakfast, the journey continues 255km by road (6 hours) to Mandalay through varied agricultural landscapes and villages.  After lunch at local restaurant, experience the sights and sounds of Mandalay including one of the most revered religious monuments in Myanmar, the Maha Muni Pagoda; the Shwe Ibin Monastery; the Golden Palace Monastery, a superb example of a traditional wooden building and Kuthodaw Pagoda the world’s largest book, made of marble.  Visit a traditional hand-woven silk workshop as well as a Kalaga tapestries craftsmen’s shop before proceeding to Mandalay Hill for sunset.  Dinner and overnight stay in Mandalay.

Day 2: Yangon - Bago - Kyaik-Tiyo (B,L,D):  After breakfast, start your drive to Bago (84km - 1½ hours).  Sightseeing starts with the charming and characteristic Monastery of Kya Khet Waii, an eminent teaching center for hundreds of monks from neighboring regions to study Buddhism.  You will have ample time to observe when the monks walk mindfully in procession for their last meal of the day.  The tour continues to the over a thousand years old Shwesandaw Pagoda with its spire taller than the Shwedagon Pagoda.  Proceed to the Kin Pun 'base camp' (110km - 3 1/2 hours), lunch at local restaurant en route.  The tour will continue to one of Myanmar's landmarks, which is famous for its precarious position and religious importance: Kyaik-Tiyo the 'Golden Rock', a huge boulder completely covered by gold leaf and delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff.  To reach the Pagoda from Kin Pun a steep 11km road leads to the upper staging point.  The journey is made in open trucks, which are very crowded.  The 'upper area' must be traveled by foot, at present, and the walk is approximately 4km up a steep path which ascends some 500 m to the Golden Rock.  If you wish to take a more comfortable approach, you can sit back and be carried in sedan chairs by four porters.  This will incur an extra cost of approx.  US$8.00 p.p.  (to be paid on the spot).  On arrival you can enjoy the beautiful sunset.  Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: Mandalay - Bagan (B,L,D):  After early breakfast, transfer to the jetty and board the Chinese-built ferry for your journey on the AYEYARWADY River to Bagan.  The trip takes approx.  8 hours downriver, depending on River conditions and water level.  Boxed lunch will be provided.  Upon arrival in Bagan, transfer to your hotel and time permitting start with sightseeing.  Dinner and overnight stay in Bagan.

Day 9: Bagan (B,L,D):  After breakfast, stroll through the colorful local Market and continue the day with visits to the most significant Pagodas and Temples of Bagan including Shwezigon Pagoda, built by King Anawratha in the early 11th century as a religious shrine; Ku Byanuk Gyi, a Temple with superb murals of Jataka scenes; Khay Min Ga Temple, noted for its panoramic view of the area’s numerous monuments and Ananda Temple, with four standing Buddha images.  After lunch at local restaurant, visit one of Myanmar’s most treasured handicrafts, a lacquerware craftsmen’s workshop in nearby Myinkabar village.  You will continue to Manuha Temple, built in the Mon style in 1059 and follow on to Nanbaya Temple, a unique sandstone monument said to have been the palace of King Manuha.  Proceed to Bupaya Pagoda or Mingala Zedi Stupa to watch the sunset over the famous Ayeywaddy River.  Dinner at a Riverside restaurant and overnight stay in Bagan. 

Day 10: Bagan (B,L,D):  After breakfast, visit the site of Tayokepyay Temple in Min Nan Thu Village; Phaya Thone Zu and Nandamanya Temples noted for exquisite murals of 13th century; Kyat Kan Cave Monastery, a famous meditation retreat in Bagan.  Farming villages around Bagan will give you insight into the lives of the local people.  After lunch at local restaurant in Bagan, a colorfully decorated ox-cart (if Available) is waiting to show you more of Bagan's ancient Temples in the traditional way of transportation used by people in Myanmar's countryside.  Close your day with an excursion by boat on the Ayeywaddy River to watch the sun set over the plain of Bagan.  Dinner and overnight stay in Bagan. 

Day 11:  Bagan – Mount Popa - Kalaw (B,L,D):  After early breakfast, a 300km drive (8 hours) will take you to Kalaw.  En route you will visit Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with spectacular views.  Its shrine is dedicated to animist spirits known as "nats" and you will have time to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the peak.  After lunch at simple local restaurant en route, the journey continues on a narrow, winding and bumpy road through the Shan Hills.  In the late afternoon you will reach Kalaw, a fresh and delightful Hill station, on the rim of the Shan Plateau, which is a Market center for ethnic minorities from surrounding regions.  Dinner and overnight stay in Kalaw. 

Day 12: Kalaw – Pindaya - Nyaung Shwe (B,L,D):  After breakfast, proceed by road to Pindaya (52km – 1 ½ hour) and visit Pindaya Caves, a unique site housing thousands of Buddha images placed there by pilgrims over the centuries.  After lunch in Pindaya, continue to Nyaung Shwe (95km – 2 ½ hours) and check-in at your hotel.  Dinner and overnight stay in Nyaung Shwe. 

Day 13: Inle Lake (B,L,D):  After breakfast, a full day excursion by boat on Inle Lake will include sights of the famous leg rowers, typical floating gardens, local methods of fishing, village life and magnificent scenery.  Lunch will be served at a local restaurant on the lake itself.  Visits are made to Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda; the weaving village of Inpawkhon and to one of the local Markets in the Inle Lake region (on Market days only).  In the afternoon, depending on the water level, board a boat to the Western Shore of Inle Lake, where you will find the beginning of a stair path leading to the hidden and unknown Inn Thein Pagoda complex.  Dinner and overnight stay in Nyaung Shwe. 

Day 14: Inle Lake – Heho – Yangon (B):  After breakfast, you will be transferred by boat to Nyaung Shwe and proceed to Heho Airport (25km – 1 hour) for domestic flight to Yangon.  Upon arrival at Yangon airport, transfer to your hotel and the rest of the day is at your leisure with time for own explorations, shopping or relaxing by the pool.  Lunch and dinner to own account.  Overnight stay in Yangon. 

Day 15:  Yangon (B):  Breakfast at hotel.  Transfer to airport for your departure flight.

Myanmar Overland - 15 Day/14 Night

Day 1: Yangon (no meals):  Upon arrival at Yangon airport you will be transferred to your hotel.  Your journey begins with an afternoon tour through Yangon’s colonial-style city center.  Visit Sule Pagoda, dating back over 2,000 years ago; the magnificent reclining Buddha at Chauk Htat Gyi and after a photo stop at the Karaweik Hall, a 'hamsa-bird-shaped' floating barge on Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake; stroll through the Bogyoke (Scotts) Market with hundreds of food, clothes, handicrafts and gems stores.  Complete your first day in Myanmar with an extended visit to one of the world’s most spectacular monuments, the Shwedagon Pagoda.  Lunch and dinner at own account.  Overnight stay in Yangon.

Day 2: Yangon – Pyay (Prome) (B,L,D):  After early breakfast, drive (280km – 6 hours) to Pyay (Prome), situated near the ancient capital of Sri Ksetra (Thayekhittaya), which flourished between 5th and 9th century and where extensive archaeological excavations have taken place.  After lunch at local restaurant, start a boat trip through the walls of the limestone Riverbanks, along the ancient Pagodas to Akaut Taung, a former customs gate for merchants sailing on the Ayeywaddy.  En route, stop at Myoma Village, which used to be a palace site during the 8th century.  Continue to Htone Village from where you will be transferred back to Pyay by road.  Dinner at simple local restaurant and overnight stay  in Pyay.

Day 3: Pyay (Prome) - Bagan (B,L,D):  After breakfast, admire the ancient Stupas of the Be Be Gyi Pagoda and visit the Archaeological Museum at the Hmawzar Village, before you continue your 350km (9 hours) overland trip to Bagan.  Lunch at simple local restaurant en route.  Upon arrival, transfer directly to your hotel.  Dinner and overnight stay in Bagan.

Day 6: Bagan - Sale - Mount Popa (B,L,D):  After early breakfast, you will board a boat downriver (approx.  3 hours) to explore Sale, a town which developed during the late Bagan era.  Worth a visit is the Yoke Sone Monastery with its exceptional woodcarvings on the outside of the building.  After lunch at local restaurant, continue to visit Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with spectacular views.  Its shrine is dedicated to animist spirits known as "nats" and you will have time to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the peak.  Transfer to the Popa Mountain Resort and rest of the day at leisure for relaxing by the pool or strolls through the surrounding forest.  Dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Mount Popa – Mandalay (B,L,D):  After breakfast, the journey continues 255km by road (6 hours) to Mandalay through varied agricultural landscapes and villages.  Lunch at local restaurant en route.  Upon arrival in Mandalay, transfer to your hotel.  Dinner at hotel and overnight stay in Mandalay. 

Day 8: Amarapura - Mandalay (B,L,D):  After breakfast, excursion to Amarapura, 15km from Mandalay.  Visit Mahagandayon, a famous Buddhist Monastery, where more than a thousand monks live and study; continue to 200-year-old U Bein teak bridge, built in 1782 at the time when Amarapura was Royal capital.  Visit Bagaya Monastery, with a superb collection of Buddha statues.  After lunch at local restaurant, experience the sights and sounds of Mandalay including one of the most revered religious monuments in Myanmar, the Maha Muni Pagoda; the Shwe Ibin Monastery; the Golden Palace Monastery, a superb example of a traditional wooden building and Kuthodaw Pagoda the world’s largest book, made of marble.  Visit a traditional hand-woven silk workshop as well as a Kalaga tapestries craftsmen’s shop before proceeding to Mandalay Hill for sunset.  Dinner at local restaurant and overnight stay in Mandalay. 

Day 9: Mandalay - Monywa (B,L,D):  After breakfast, proceed to Monywa (150km - 4 hours).  Visit en route the Thanbodday Pagoda; 845 small Stupas are rising up to the richly decorated central Stupa, which is reminding a bit of Borobudur in Java.  Take a walk through the nearby banyan tree grove Boddhi-Tataung with the thousand Buddha images sitting at the foot of each tree and enjoy the panoramic view from Aung Setkaya Pagoda, standing 130 meter high on the Po Khaung Hills.  After lunch at simple local restaurant, cross the Chindwin River by ferry boat and proceed by pick-up or jeep (40km - 1 hour) to Hpo Win Daung, a system of impressive sandstone Caves containing Buddha statues, wood carvings and fine mural paintings mainly in Inwa-style, some dating back to 15th century.  Dozens of large and small Caves with about 450,000 images are hidden in the area of the Hpo Win Hills.  Dinner and overnight stay in Monywa.
