VISAS TO MYANMAR
Travel to, from and within Myanmar is strictly controlled by the Government. A passport and visa are required. Travelers are required to show their passports with valid visa at airports, train stations and hotels. There are frequent security roadblocks on all roads and immigration checkpoints in Myanmar, even on domestic air flights. The military government rarely issues visas to journalists, and several journalists traveling to Myanmar on tourist visas have been denied entry. In an effort to prevent international child abduction, Myanmar has initiated procedures at entry/exit points. These include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry/departure.
A tourist visa for Myanmar can be obtained from any Myanmar Embassy or Consulate world-wide. Visas are normally valid for 28 days. A fee is payable for your visa, currently around US$20 each. Two types of visa are available: 'FIT' visa and 'Package Tour Visa'. The 'FIT' visa (Fully Independent Traveler) requires the holder to purchase US$ 300 worth of Foreign Exchange Certificates (FEC) upon entry into Myanmar. The FEC office is located between Immigration and Customs. The face value of the FEC, issued in denominations from 1 to 20 dollar equivalents, is equal to the US dollar, but its actual value fluctuates. Any amount over US$300 may be exchanged back to U.S. dollars. Within Myanmar, FEC's can be used to purchase goods and services but they cannot be changed back into dollars at the end of your stay. These procedures are subject to change without notice. The 'Package Tour Visa' means the holder does not have to purchase any FEC's. If you have pre-booked your holiday through a tour operator, a letter should be obtained from them confirming that a 'Package Tour Visa' should be issued. Any child above 7 years must have a visa. |
